Question

Is there any relationship in the number of chromosomes of meiocytes and gametes?

Solution

Meiocytes and gametes:

  1. A meiocyte is a kind of cell which differentiates into a gamete via procedure of meiosis.
  2. Through meiosis, the diploid meiocyte divides into 4 haploid gametes.
  3. In sexually reproducing organisms, meiocytes give rise to haploid gametes, which on fertilization produces zygote.
  4. Yes, there is also a relationship between the number of chromosomes of meiocytes and gametes of the same species.
  5. As on meiosis, the meiocyte gives rise to the gametes.
  6. So, the number of chromosomes in gametes is half to the number of chromosomes in meiocyte.
  7. For example- If the chromosome number is diploid(2n) in a meiocyte, then the chromosome number in the gamete would be haploid(n).
