Question

It is established that an electric current through a metallic conductor produces a magnetic field around it. Is there a similarmagnetic field produced around a thin beam of moving (i) positivelycharged alpha particles, (ii) neutrons? Justify your answer by giving suitable arguments.

Solution

(i) Yes,
(ii) No.
Alpha particles are positively charged particlesand therefore a thin beam of moving alpha particles constitutes acurrent in the direction of motion of the alpha particles. The neutrons on the other hand are electrically neutral and therefore there is no current associated with the thin beam of moving neutrons.
