Jiya walks 6 km due east and then 8 km due north. How far is she from her starting place?

As per the given information, we can draw the following figure, which is a right angled triangle at B.

Distance from starting point to the final position is the hypotenuse of right angled ΔABC,
i.e. AC2=AB2+BC2 [by Pythagoras theorem]
(6)2+(8)2=(Distance)2 [ AC = distance]
36+64=(Distance)2
Distance =100=10 km
