Cells in the body are connected to the neighbouring cells and communicate with them in different ways. One of the ways in which they are connected to each other are the intercellular junctions or cell junctions. In gap junction, the adjacent cells have protoplasmic connections through special protein cylinder called connexons. These are direct cytoplasm to cytoplasm connections. They facilitate cell communication by movement of ions and molecules between adjacent cells.
Tight junctions stop substances from leaking across the tissue. Adherens junctions perform cementing functions and keep neighbouring cells together.
