  • Salivary glands are present in the mouth and secrete saliva which breaks down starch into simple sugars. (1 mark)
  • The stomach is a J-shaped organ that produces HCl ie., Hydrochloric acid which makes the environment of the stomach acidic in nature. The stomach also secretes gastric juices (digestive juices) and it breaks down proteins into amino acids. (1 mark)
  • The liver secretes bile which helps in the breakdown of large fat droplets into the smaller droplets. (1 mark)
  • The small intestine secretes intestinal juices which further breaks down the food into absorbable nutrients as:
    • Carbohydrates is broken down into glucose.
    • Protein is broken down into amino acids.
    • Fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol. (1 mark)
