Solution

The correct option is B spleen
Lymphoid organs are composed of lymphoid tissue. Lymphoid tissue is a specialized form of connective tissue that comprises of a large number of lymphocytes apart from other components. Lymphoid organs are the sites of either lymphocyte production and maturation (primary lymphoid organs such as bone marrow and thymus) or of lymphocyte activation (secondary lymphoid organs).

Lymphocytes are the white blood cells which have a non-granular cytoplasm and can provide immunity against specific foreign substances by the production of antibodies, phagocytosis (engulfing cells and digesting them) and also lysing the foreign cells, etc.

Organs like spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, Peyer’s patches in small intestine, appendix and the lymphoid tissues associated with the mucosal membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urogenital tracts (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues - MALT) are considered as secondary lymphoid organs. The mature lymphocytes migrate to these organs and come in contact with trapped antigens to which they bind via their surface receptors. This triggers a cascade of immunological reactions that ultimately help in elimination of the antigens from the body.

The largest single mass of lymphoid tissue in the body is the spleen. It is located just beneath the diaphragm, in the upper left abdominal cavity, and posterior to the stomach. It consists of two types of tissues, the white pulp made up of lymphoid tissue and the red pulp filled with blood and cells, such as monocytes and macrophages (phagocytic cells that can engulf and digest foreign bodies).

The spleen helps in sensitisation (identification of antigen) and proliferation of lymphocytes on exposure to antigens. Apart from this, it also acts as a reservoir for erythrocytes in the body and helps to filter blood by trapping foreign substances. It is also the site for destruction of worn-out erythrocytes in the body.

Tonsils, Peyer’s patches of small intestine and appendix are secondary lymphoid organs but they do not represent the largest single mass of lymphoid tissue in the human body.
