Question 88
Length and breadth of the floor of a room are 5 m and 3 m respectively. Forty tiles, each with area 116m2 are used to cover the floor partially. Find the ratio of the tiled to the non-tiled portion of the floor.
Given, length of the floor of a room = 5m
Breadth of the floor of a room = 3m
Area of the room = Length × Breadth
=5×3=15m2
∵ Area of 1 tile=116m2
∴ Area of 40 tiles=116×40=2.5m2
Area covered by tiles =2.5m2
Area not covered by tiles =(15−2.5)=12.5m2
Ratio of the tiled to non-tiled portion
= Area of tiled portionArea of non-tiled portion
= 2.5m212.5m2=25125=15=1:5
Hence, the ratio of the tiled to the non-tiled portion of the floor is 1 : 5.
