Soil is alkaline above 8 pH, acidic below 6 pH. In alkaline soil there is deficiency of zinc, manganese and iron. Most alkaline soils are also saline in nature. In acidic soils, calcium, magnesium and potassium are deficient while iron, manganese and aluminium are abundant. Slight acidity favours forest formation. Slight alkalinity favours grassland formation. Acidity is overcomed by treatment with lime. Alkalinity is treated with the help of gypsum.
