IUDs stands for intrauterine devices. IUDs are small contraceptive devices made of plastic or metal that are put inside the female womb to obstruct fertilization and pregnancy. On the basis of the composition and mode of action, there are three different generations IUDs.

The first-generation (non-medicated) intrauterine devices are Lippes loops, rings etc. Lippes loop does not allow the fertilisation of sperm with egg in the female reproductive system. It increases the process of sperm phagocytosis as it attracts macrophages in the uterine cavity.

Second generation IUDs work on the basis of Copper release like CuT, Cu7, multiload 375 etc. Copper releasing IUDs have spermicidal properties as it increases the levels of prostaglandins and white blood cells within the uterus, thus causing phagocytosis of sperms.

The third generation is hormone-releasing IUDs like progestasert, LNG - 20 etc. the hormones released from the hormone-releasing IUDs make the uterus unsuitable for the survival of sperms as well as for implantation.
