  1. Wavell Plan – It came after the war in Europe was over. Idea was to reconstruct the governor general's executive council pending the preparation of a new constitution. For this purpose, a conference was convened by Lord Wavell, at Shimla in June 1945. And the proposals that were put forward is called Wavell Plan
  2. Cabinet Mission- In February 1946, the Attlee Government announced the decision to send a high-powered mission of 3 British Cabinet members to find out ways & means for a negotiated, peaceful transfer of power to India.
  3. Call for direct action-After the failure of Cabinet Mission direct action started around August 16, 1946.
  4. Plan Balkan- Between March & May of 1947, Mountbatten decided that the Cabinet Mission Plan had become untenable & formulated an alternative plan. This plan was prepared by a committee of General Sir Hastings Ismay, Sir George Abell & Lord Mountbatten himself. The Plan Balkan was completed and presented on 15-16 April 1947 by Ismay to the assembly of provincial governors in Delhi. Due to this, this plan was also called the “Ismay Plan“.
