Question

Liquids mix more slowly than gases. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion: Diffusion is a physical process that refers to the net movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to one of lower concentration.

Diffusion in liquids is slow as compared to gases:

  • The particles in the gases are more loosely packed than liquids.
  • The force of attraction between the particles in the liquids is more than in gases.
  • The particles of liquid have low kinetic energy than gases and therefore can not move freely.
  • Hence, diffusion in liquids is slow as compared to gases.
