Of the two parental DNA strands, the one that runs along the 5’ 3’ direction is the sense strand or the coding strand, while the one that runs in the 3’ 5’ direction is the antisense strand or template strand. The antisense strand serves as template for the new mRNA strand. Moreover, RNA polymerase can add nucleotides only in the 5’ 3’ direction and hence, the newly forming mRNA strand would be aligned 5’ 3’. The newly transcribed mRNA strand thus, has a sequence that is complementary to the template strand and similar to the coding strand, with the difference that ‘U’ replaces ‘T’.
