Law of conservation of mass.

  • The law of conservation of mass states that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a physical or chemical reaction.
  • In a chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactant is equal to the total mass of the products. There is no change in mass during a chemical reaction.
  • The total mass of reactants = the Total mass of products.
  • In physical reaction, the substance may undergo a change in shape, size or other physical properties but the total mass of the substance will remain the same.
  • The total mass of matter before a physical change + the Total mass of matter after a physical change.

Example -When a wood burns in the air, a chemical change occurs and the wood gets converted to ash and smoke.

The reactants are wood and oxygen from the air. The products are ash and smoke containing gases like carbon dioxide.

ie, The total mass of reactants will equal the total mass of products.
