Solution

The correct option is B 1 - B, 2 - A, 3 - D, 4 - C
The solar radiations from the sun cross through different layers of the atmosphere. While doing so they either get reflected or absorbed across the various elements in the atmosphere.

About one-fourth of the incoming solar radiation is reflected back by clouds and gases.

The rest of the solar radiation is absorbed by the Earth during the day. At night, Earth's surface cools, re-emitting the trapped heat as infrared radiation.

Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs etc. exist in the Earth’s atmosphere and the molecules of these gases reabsorb the majority of the infrared radiation and radiate heat, thus keeping the earth warm. This is called greenhouse effect.

Carbon dioxide (60%) contributes maximum to the greenhouse effect on Earth. Methane contributes 20%, nitrous oxide 6% and chlorofluorocarbons contribute 14% to the greenhouse effect on Earth.

The capacity of the atmosphere to keep the Earth warm depends upon the concentration of these greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The excessive increase in the concentration of these gases in the atmosphere would retain more and more of the infrared radiation resulting in global warming.

Global warming is the heating of Earth due to an increase in the level of greenhouse gases. The level of greenhouse gases is increasing these days because of human activities such as burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
