A food chain is series of plants/animals which are interrelated in the form of organism being eaten as food by the other. A food chain consists of different trophic levels. In this, plants are primary producers. They occupy the primary trophic level. The animals eating plants are called as primary consumers. These are herbivores. Animals eating primary consumers are called as secondary consumers. These are carnivores. Animals eating secondary consumers are called as tertiary consumers. These are carnivores. Decomposers are those organics that decompose the organic matter of dead animals and plants. These are saprotrophs.
