(A) When isopropyl magnesium bromide is treated with acetic acid or propanoic acid, propane is obtained. This is grignard reaction.
(B) The carbonyl group of acetone can be reduced to methylene group to obtain propane.
The reagent used is Zn/Hg and HCl (Clemensen reduction) or KOH and hydrazine (wolff-kishner reduction) or P+HI.
(C) The hydroboration of propene gives propane. In this reaction, the C=C double bond is reduced to single bond.
(D) This Ullmann coupling. When 4-chloro toluene is heated in presence of Cu, the coupled product 4,4'-dimethylbiphenyl is obtained.
