In maize, cotyledons remain underground and the epicotyl elongates. This type of germination is called hypogeal germination.

In beans, hypocotyl elongates and the cotyledons are pushed above the ground. It is called as epigeal germination.

In viviparous germination, seed germinates inside the fruit while it is still attached to the parent plant. This is seen in Rhizophora.
