Sandy soils retain the least amount of water as the soil particles are very large. Thus, water quickly seeps deep into the sandy soil.

Clayey soil has very small soil particles. This allows water to be retained for a long time. Hence, it has the least percolation rate.

Loamy soil consists of clay, sand and silt. It has an average particle size. Thus, it has moderate water retention capacity.
