A base which is soluble in water is called an alkali. The word alkali is Arabic which means 'ashes of a plant'. Earlier alkalis were made by burning wood and other plants. All alkalis are bases but all bases are not alkalis.
Bases which produce a high concentration of hydroxyl ions in water are called strong bases. E.g., Sodium hydroxide(NaOH), potassium hydroxide(KOH), etc.
Bases which dissociate in water only slightly and thus produce a low concentration of hydroxyl ions are called weak bases. E.g., Calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) , ammonium hydroxide(NH4OH), etc.
