During World War I, the national movement for independence gained momentum in India. The Lucknow Pact was signed in 1916 CE, which brought the Muslim League and the INC together. This was followed by the August Declaration of 1917 by Edwin Montague. The Government of India Act was then passed in 1919 CE.
