All the stupas from Ashoka's time had the same basic structure. The hemispherical dome containing the relics of Buddha or Buddhist monks is called the anda. The square-shaped railing above the dome, surrounding the pillar is known as a harmika. The stone fence surrounding the dome is known as a vedika and the decorated gateways are known as toranas.
