Follicle stimulating hormone is a water-soluble hormone. The water soluble hormones interact with membrane-bound receptors that are present on the cell membrane of the target cell. These hormones cannot cross the cell membrane and therefore cannot enter the cell. They produce their effect by generating second messengers (e.g. cyclic AMP, $I{P}_3$, $C{a}^{++}$ etc.) inside the cell, and these second messengers in turn regulate cellular metabolism.

Estrogen is a steroid hormone and it is a lipid-soluble hormone. Lipid-soluble hormones can cross the cell membrane and enter the cell. They interact with intracellular receptors, which are sometimes present inside the nucleus.

Growth factors are hormones that are secreted by non-endocrine tissues. Growth factors stimulate normal cell growth and differentiation also promote repair and regeneration.
