Glucagon stimulates the breakdown of glycogen to from glucose and also stimulates the formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources (gluconeogenesis). It causes an increase in blood glucose levels, and hence has a hyperglycemic effect.

Insulin acts on hepatocytes and adipocytes and stimulates the uptake and utilisation of glucose by the cells. This leads to decreased blood glucose levels, hence insulin is a hypoglycemic hormone.

The parathyroid hormone stimulates the resorption of bones releasing calcium. It also promotes the reabsorption of calcium by renal tubules and calcium absorption from the digested food. Therefore, it increases the Ca2+ levels in the blood, i.e., it is a hypercalcemic hormone.

Calcitonin decreases the blood calcium levels by promoting the deposition of calcium in bones. Therefore, it is a hypocalcemic hormone.
