Match the following of column I with that of column II.
Column I | Column II |
i. α - interferons | p. natural killer cells |
ii. β - interferons | q. leucocytes (B and T cells) |
iii. γ - interferons | r. fibroblast |
Interferons are low molecular weight proteins synthesized by host cells in response to viral attack.
α – interferons are produced when virus infects the leukocyte- cells (both B and T cells), while β – interferons are released from virus-infected fibroblasts. Natural killer cells play an important role in immune response by producing γ – interferons. This chemical is an important component involved in the differentiation of Helper T – cells.
Recent research has shown that interferons are produced in response to certain protozoans and rickettsia (viral RNA, viral glycoproteins, and bacterial endotoxins).
