The varna system is said to have originated from Purusha, the cosmic being. According to this myth from the Vedic Age, it is from the mouth of the Purusha that the Brahmins were born. They were considered to be the learned priests. The Kshatriyas are said to have come from the arms, and that made them the warrior class. Vaishyas, who constituted the trading community, came from the thighs. Finally, the Shudras were created from the Purusha’s feet and were forced to function as menial labourers.
