A blast furnace is a gigantic, steel stack lined with refractory brick where the concentrated iron ore, coke, and limestone are dumped from the top, and a blast of hot air is blown from the bottom. This process is widely used in the manufacturing of iron.
Zone of reduction (300°C):
Fe2O3 + 3CO →2Fe + 3CO2
Zone of slag formation (1900°C):
CO2 + C → 2COCaCO3 → CaO + CO2CaO + SiO2 →CaSiO3(slag)
Zone of combustion (1200°−1400°C):
C + O2 → CO2
