Preproinsulin is an inactive precursor to the active hormone insulin. Proinsulin is a single polypeptide chain made up of the two subunits, B and A of insulin joined by the C-peptide region. It is converted into proinsulin by peptidase enzyme. It removes peptide from its N-terminus. Hence, proinsulin is converted into the active insulin by removal of the C-peptide region.
