Question

Meiotic division during oogenesis is different from that in spermatogenesis. Explain

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
The main difference between the meiotic divisions between oogenesis and spermatogenesis lies in the nature of the daughter cells. In case of spermatogenesis, equal division takes place, i.e. all the four spermatids produced through meiosis are structurally and functionally equal. But in the case of oogenesis, through the first and second meiotic division, three polar bodies are generated along with a single ovum. The ovum is structurally bigger than the polar bodies. Also unlike ovum the polar bodies are non-functional and degenerative.

Regards.
