Buddhism made several contributions to Indian culture. The Sanghas which were the administrative council of Buddhism established along democratic lines to help spread Buddhism in various regions. The Sangas helped in spreading democratic values in society. Moreover, numerous caves, chaityas, viharas and pillars were built, which vastly contributed to the field of art and architecture. Buddhism also contributed to promoting trade and cultural relations between India and neighbouring countries. Myanmar, Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Java and Sumatra became the main centres of Buddhism.
