Protozoans: These are single-celled eukaryotic organisms that are either free-living or parasitic. Three diseases caused by Protozoa are:

  1. Malaria: It is caused by Plasmodium sp. that interferes with the normal functioning of red blood cells (RBCs) and reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the RBCs.
  2. Amoebiasis: This protozoan disease is caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It results in acute dysentery characterized by watery bowels expelled with blood and mucous.
  3. African trypanosomiasis: It is also called the sleeping sickness and is caused by Trypanosoma brucei. The disease is characterized by severe fatigue due to insomnia and progressively declining neurological functions.
