Bacteria have several copies of circular DNA in addition to a chromosome. They are called plasmids. They contain genes and replicate independently. Hence they are carried from generation to generation. pBR${}_3$${}_2$${}_2$ is one of the earliest genetically engineered plasmid. It contains the genes for resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline and can be amplified with PCR. The molecular weight is 2.83 x 106 daltons.
