1. Symplast is the inner side of the plasma membrane in which water and other lower molecules can diffuse freely.
2. Hence, the pathway of ions, water and lower molecules created by symplast is known as the symplastic pathway.
3. It is relatively slower than the apoplastic pathway.

Function:

1. The symplast pathway allows movement of water and ions between cytoplasm of adjacent cells.
