Dear student,
Symplast involves passage of substances through cell membrane down a potential gradient.
Symplastic pathway involves movement of water from one cell to another through cytoplasmic connections called plasmodesmata and not through cell membrane but water pass through cell membrane only once to enter into the cell and further water moves through plasmodesmata into another cell.

Structures involved: Plasmodesmata that are cytoplasmic connections.
