Solution

Classification:

  1. "Classification" refers to the process of organizing organisms into groups based on their similarities and dissimilarities in order to demonstrate their relationship.
  2. All living organisms are identified and categorized based on their bodily structure and function.

Types of classification:

The taxonomists divided the classification into three systems: (i) Artificial system of classification, (ii) Natural system of classification, and (iii) Phylogenetic system of classification.

Artificial system of classification:

  1. This categorization system was based on one or a few superficial characteristics.
  2. This system was based on habitat, number of plant parts (cotyledons), number of carpels and stamen (floral characters) and phenology.
  3. This system was followed by a number of scientists like Theophrastus, Carolus Linnaeus and Aristotle.

The natural system of classification:

  1. This categorization method was based on a greater number of characteristics accessible at the time of plant observation.
  2. This classification is based on natural affinities.

The phylogenetic system of classification:

  1. This categorization method was based on the evolutionary sequence as well as the genetic link between the various plant groupings.
  2. It is used for studying relationships with other organisms rather than identification.
