The lithosphere: It is the component of the Biosphere that includes all landforms. It exists as the outer, rigid layer of the earth as mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, etc.

The functions of the lithosphere are as follows :

  1. It provides a medium for the cycle of nutrients or minerals.
  2. It supports the lifeforms that dwell in the varied terrestrial habitats that exist on land.
  3. It is the main nutrient pool for the land animals.
  4. It helps in the fixation, growth, and development of plants, habitat for terrestrial animals, and microorganisms.
  5. It provides the environment for the decomposition of dead plants, animals, and other biotas.
