The kidneys present in the abdominal region are the major organs of the excretory system. They are reddish-brown bean-shaped structures present on either side of the backbone.

Hilum:

The hilum is a bundle of tubes (blood vessels, nerves, ureters), a notch present on the medial surface of each kidney.

Role of hilum:

Hilum acts as a gateway for entry and exit of blood by blood vessels, urine by ureters, and nerves.
