Question

Mention two disadvantages of vegetative propagation.

Open in App
Solution

Vegetative propagation:

  1. It is an asexual reproduction method in which plants use their leaves, roots, and stems to produce new plantlets.
  2. It can occur due to plant fragmentation and regeneration of specific vegetative components.
  3. For example, Begonia and Bryophyllum vegetatively propagate through its leaves.

Disadvantages of vegetative propagation:

  1. The vegetatively propagated plants are short-lived and small-sized compared to the seed-propagated plants.
  2. No new varieties can be produced through this process.
  3. Specialists are required, and this process is often expensive compared to seed propagation.
