Question

____ metal cannot be extracted from their aqueous solutions by electrolysis.

Open in App
Solution

Electrolysis of Ca from its aqueous salt solution(CaCl2).

  • Dissociation of the compounds into the ions takes place as:

CaCl2Ca+2+2Cl-H2OH++OH-

  • The cations present are Ca+2andH+, and anions are Cl-andOH-
  • At the cathode, both the cations Ca+2andH+ can migrate but because of discharge preference H+ will get discharged because it lies lower than Ca in the electrochemical series.
  • So instead of Ca, H+ will get reduced and form H2gas.

2H++2e-H2

  • At the anode, the anions OH-andCl- will migrate but none will get discharged instead Ca will self ionise to form Ca+2 ion.

CaCa+2+2e-

So, Calcium(Ca) metal cannot be extracted from their aqueous solutions by electrolysis.
