Solution

MgO is used as refractory.
Magnesium oxide is used to make linings for some furnaces. It is known as a refractory material - which just means that it is resistant to heat and retains its strength at very high temperatures. Magnesium oxide has a high melting point (2852oC) and so, resists the high temperatures in a furnace. Its melting point is high because of the strong ionic bonds between the small Mg2+ and O2 ions.
