$MgO$ is used as refractory.

Magnesium oxide is used to make linings for some furnaces. It is known as a refractory material - which just means that it is resistant to heat and retains its strength at very high temperatures. Magnesium oxide has a high melting point (${2852}^{o}C$) and so, resists the high temperatures in a furnace. Its melting point is high because of the strong ionic bonds between the small $M{g}^{2+}$ and $O^{2-}$ ions.
