Mikhail Gorbachev became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1985 and introduced a series of political and economic changes to reform the Soviet system.
a. As a leader he certainly looked into contemporary realities and growing democratic wave which compelled him to introduce a series of reforms to overhaul Soviet political and economic structure
b. The Soviet system lagged behind the Western capitalist system in terms of technology, infrastructure therefore to keep in pace with the technological revolution of the west, it was felt imperative to introduce reforms.
c. Mikhail Gorbachev also felt the need of normalising relations with the US , decided to bring about reforms and democratise the system.
d. The soviet system was characterised by rigidity, strict bureaucratic control and authoritarianism. People did not enjoy any political rights, or freedom of speech, the system thus had failed to satisfy the political and economic aspirations of the people. Therefore, reforms were considered essential to loosen the strict administrative system.
e. Even though the changes introduced by him brought about instability and later resulted in the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, as a statesman was acknowledged at the international level to embrace democratic principles
f. His policies were credited of bringing an end to the Cold war and also end to hostilities between US and USSR
g. The disintegration of the Soviet Union, resulted in withdrawal of hard core communist ideology from the Eastern Europe and lessened tensions at the global front.
h. In 1990, thus he was awarded Nobel Peace prize as he was credited at the International level for ending the Cold war and initiating peace process with USA.
