Question

Molar conductivities at infinite dilution of KCl, HCl and CH3COOK are 0.013, 0.038 and 0.009Sm2 mol1 respectively at 291 K. If the conductivity of 0.001M CH3COOH is 2.72×103Sm1. Find the degree of ionization of CH3COOH.

Solution

Λ0(CH3COOH)=Λ0(CH3COOK)+Λ0(HCl)Λ0(KCl)

=0.009+0.0380.013=0.034 Sm2mol1
Also, Λ=κC=2.72×103×1030.001=2.72×103 Sm2/mol.
The degree of the dissociation is given by the expression α=ΛΛ0=2.72×1030.034=0.08
