Question

Mr Kumar had two Gold blocks each weighing 200grams. He gave one block to Gold Smith and asked to make a statue of Lord Ganesha. After a week goldsmith gave him the statue as it was ordered. Mr Kumar weighed the statue and he found it 200gram. But he was suspicious about the purity of the gold. So he decided to check its purity. He took two big bowls full of the water up to the brim and placed these bowls separately into two larger vessels. He immersed the statue and the gold block in the bowls separately. He collected the overflowed water and measured the volume of water displaced by statue is more than the volume of water displaced by gold block.
(A) what do you conclude from the above observation?

(B) Is the statue made of pure gold? If not, which metal would be used?

(C) Which moral value did the goldsmith violate?

Solution

(A) conclusion from the above observation

  1. According to Archimedes' principle “a body immersed in a fluid is subjected to an upwards force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid”.
  2. Now, if the gold block and statue would be displacing the same amount of water then it would be fine. However, it didn't happened.
  3. Since the weight of gold block and the statue is same but statue displaces more water than gold block, hence the statue is less dense than gold block.
  4. This proves that something has been added to the gold while making statue.

(B) The statue is not made of pure gold. Copper or its alloy like brass would be used to make it.

(C) The goldsmith violated the honesty, i.e., he showed dishonesty
