To multiply two numbers using distributive property of multiplication over addition, we must first express them in expanded form.

Numbers in expanded form are:
999=900+90+9

Now, 999×999=(900+90+9)×(900+90+9)
Since, both the numbers are of three digits, we need 3×3 box as depicted in figure below,


Sum of numbers in each box will give the product of 999×999,

Therefore, 999×999=998,001
