Question

N shell is the outermost shell and the no. of electrons in it are 2×16 = 32. But the theory suggested by Bohr and Bury says that the max. No. of electrons that can be accommodated in the outermost shell is 8. How ?

Solution

Dear User,
Maximum number of electrons that can be holded by a N shell is equal to 32. This means that the N shell has the capacity to hold maximum of 32 electrons but maximum of 8 electrons are only present in the outermost shell even if it has the capacity to hold more electrons as this makes the atom more stable. This rule is called octet rule.
