The pancreas is called a mixed gland because it has both endocrine and exocrine functions.
Exocrine role: It secretes a digestive fluid called pancreatic juice, which is released inside the small intestine through the pancreatic duct. This fluid consists of various digestive enzymes like trypsin, lipase, amylase, nucleases, etc.
Endocrine role: It produces two hormones, insulin and glucagon, which are released into the blood. Both these hormones are required for glucose metabolism.
