An AC generator is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a coil is rotated in a magnetic field, the magnetic flux linked with the coil changes and therefore an e.m.f. is induced between the ends of the coil.

This is used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy which can be used to operate various electrical devices.
