Name or state the following with reference to the elements of the first three periods of the periodic table.
(a) Noble gas with duplet arrangement of electrons.
(b) Metalloid in Period 3.
(c) Valency of elements in Group 14 and Group 15.
(d) Noble gas having electronic configuration: 2, 8, 8.
(a) The element which will have two electrons in its valence shell or outermost orbit is known to be a Duplet element and its configuration is said to be the Duplet Configuration. Helium(electronic configuration -2) is a gas having a duplet arrangement of electrons.
(b) The third period contains eight elements: sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), chlorine (Cl), and argon (Ar). Among these, three are metals (sodium, magnesium, aluminum), four are nonmetals (phosphorous, sulfur, chlorine, argon) and one is metalloid (silicon).
Hence silicon is the only metalloid in period 3.
3) Valency is the combining power of an element.
Valency of group 14(contains four electrons) = 4 as it requires 4 more electrons to become stable.
Valency of group 15 (contains five valence electrons) = 3 as it will gain 3 electrons to attain stable electronic configuration.
4) Argon(Atomic no. -18) is the noble gas having electronic configuration: 2, 8, 8.
