Neurons

  1. The nervous system is made of neurons or nerve cells.
  2. The neurons are the functional unit of the nervous system.
  3. They are electrically excitable and are involved in the transmission of electrical impulses.

Types of neurons

Based on the direction in which they carry the impulses, neurons are categorized into three types:

  1. Receptor (sensory) neurons: makes up sensory nerves that receive stimuli.
  2. Effector (motor) neurons: makes up the motor nerves that take and execute commands received from CNS.
  3. Intermediate (relay) neurons: present in the brain and spinal cord and interconnect these parts.
