Solution

  • Saltpetre or saltpetre are naturally occurring nitrate salts found in rocks and soil in the form of powder and used in fertilisers and gunpowder. Because nitrates are a nitrogen source, saltpetre is also known as nitre. Saltpetre is known in Latin as "sal petrae," which translates as "rock salt."
  • Because potassium nitrate KNO3 is a nitrate salt, it is also known as saltpetre of nitre.
  • As potassium nitrate is mostly found in Bengal and Bihar, it is referred to as Bengal saltpetre.
  • As a result, potassium nitrate KNO3 is also known as Nitre and Bengal saltpetre.
