Solution

On the basis of the behavior of cotyledons, germination may be of the following two types:
1. Epigeal Germination:

  1. The cotyledons are pushed upwards above the soil into the air due to the rapid growth and elongation of the hypocotyl.
  2. For example, bean, cotton, castor, papaya, onion, and tamarind.

2. Hypogeal Germination:

  1. In this type of germination, the seed remains inside the soil.
  2. This is due to the fact that the epicotyl elongates faster than the hypocotyl so that the cotyledons remain inside the soil.
  3. For example, wheat, rice, maize, pea, groundnut, mango, etc.

Final answer: The type of germination in which the cotyledons stay below the ground is hypogeal germination.
